NeoExodus character sheet by Dyslexic Studeos

I was playing an online game today when Evan, my GM for the Reign of Winter game (my Thursday nights for the past six months or so). Sends me an instant message.

It went roughly like this: "Hey JP! They have NeoExodus classes listed." That's right. No further context, only a link. I was a bit wary. Knowing Evan, I saw that it was a tool that generates character sheets!

NICE.

He asked me if I would use them. No, my character sheets are all in stat block form these days... so I only have 1 format, and GMs can easily go over them... Still I thought these sheet were really nice: you can add the logo (whether NeoExodus or any of the Pathfinder Adventure Path).

I cannot recommend these enough. Nice stuff. Oh! And they are free! FREE!!!

The link is http://charactersheets.minotaur.cc/build/pathfinder.

A big thank you to Dyslexic Studeos for adding NeoExodus into their product!

The Mark - a NeoExodus campaign epilogue

Late last year, I believe it was in October, I put up a message saying I was looking to start a NeoExodus home game. In no time at all, I had six willing volunteer wanting to play. And since that time, I have been doing nasty things to them. Very nasty things. I will let them spread the word of all of the things they did - both good, bad and "Oops". There were a few changes to the group, such as Stephen joining in session #2, to William and Jacob later.

This was my first home game, real home game, not based on published or "going to be published" material and I really enjoyed it. I was able to use some of my favorite old-style dungeons from the TSR I-Series modules, tweaked to the Pathfinder RPG.

Without telling you everything that happened, here is the final entry in the campaign journal of "The Mark".

Alone in the dark, Athelia pondered the situation. Obroxus had failed and now she was left with almost nothing. She fumed and raged, smashing what was left after these meddlesome adventurers had left. These vandals had stolen everything they could not destroy. And what was left suffered under the blind woman's rage.

"I am so glad I gave that poisoned wine bottle to those adventurers so they would break free from your control..."

From the anger rose a new sense of dedication, a new purpose. As though her mind had been forged in the flames of her anger and sharpened upon the blade of her hatred. Just then, the solution came to her!

Maybe the imbecile had not failed entirely. Her thoughts half-formed, she rose and walked through the vandalized remains of the home she has shared with Obroxus. Snickering at the destroyed portraits, at the stolen furniture, at the traps that would need to be fixed, she made her way through the deserted mansion. It mattered little to Athelia at this time.

Heading to the basement, she pressed her hand upon a slime-covered wall. The yellowish goo swallowed her hand for a moment before parting revealing a massive alchemical laboratory.

Beakers, glass tubes, rainbow-colored powders, neon smoke escaped from uncorked bottles. She looked on in wonder trying to understand the complex experiments still underway. Finding a journal, Athelia sat on nearby chair and flipped through the pages. Obroxus had detailed his experiments on vellum. It would take her years to re-create the Mark. But she had time.

The mark would force the bearer to obey every one of your commands.

"What? The fool marked these adventurers with five others? Kago wanted Gwen gone forever. Baron von Urtenstein wanted his future wife's brother-in-law and all his people killed. The Demon Art who wanted a vessel upon Exodus. And finally Shafell the gevet needed someone to destroy her mother."

She marveled at the lack of ambition these slaves demonstrated. What if instead of applying that type of power to a group of kids, it was applied to the best and most powerful adventurers on Exodus? She squealed with joy, jumping excitedly. The hatred and anger she felt before was gone. Contempt and admiration both raced through her mind.

Her attention was drawn to a single papyrus protruding from the back. Her eyes filled with horror as she read the runes. She read how Obroxus drew power from the slave's own future selves to make them extremely powerful. Sure, it would cut their lifespan by a decade or more, but she couldn't help but marvel at the revelation.

The poison she gave the slaves severed that connection. She was the one who made it all fail! Obroxus might have made an army of servants using their own power! Horrified and disgusted with herself, she put the journal down on the table and walked to the slime wall.

As the wall closed behind Athelia, a dark-skinned hand peered out of the shadows reaching for the single piece of paper. Then the laboratory was still and quiet again.

A NeoExodus Group on Facebook!

One of our great fans has created a Facebook group for fans of NeoExodus. It's a great place to connect with other aficionados of the setting. I will be posting the occasional update to NeoExodus on there (and here).

Here is a direct link to NeoExodus Facebook Group.

I cannot wait for tomorrow's Free RPG Day. Expose people to the world.

May Commissions: Dryads as Eidolon and a NeoExodus Dalrean

This installment is a number of Games Workshop Dryads I painted up for my good friend Brian-B. Brian wanted a few conversions to match his summoner's Eidolon I painted for him a while ago. So I did him two "small" version of that thing using the dryads. The first two models are those conversions. One has a greenish skin and the other is more white/ aspen theme.

Next is the rest of the unit (I just realized there are 2 minis not pictured).

This final model is for a yet-to-be-created NeoExodus Dalrean character. I'm not saying what it is for... Not yet, you will have to stay tuned.

Free RPG Day: Advice for Temple of the Forbidden God

With Free RPG Day fast approaching, I have a few recommendations for those of you who are planning to GM the adventure - as I will at Gamers' Haven here in Colorado Springs. Check them out, they will have a LOT of events running on the day, including 2 slots of NeoExodus. These guys are really great, and I strongly recommend them!

To make this simpler, I will use a few "sidebars" to give the information and provide you with some insight.

First off, I want to thank my play-testers: Martin Blake, Neale Davidson, Jon Goldstein, Leonard Logan, and D’Anne Nelson. These people provided me with great feedback, and the adventure was made MUCH better because of their comments and thoughts. These guys are not just players, but they are friends and people who I've been gaming with for years (Lenny was one of the first person I made friend with when I first arrive here in Colorado Springs).

NeoExodus Legacies

This adventure is also playable with our organized play campaign: NeoExodus Legacies. Get rewarded for playing NeoExodus and through your actions change the world.

Why? Legacies is our Organized Play campaign where players get to directly impact the storyline. A number of the characters in the adventure (such as Harbinger Wexel) do appear in the campaign. For more information on the campaign, go to the NeoExodus Legacies Website.

Where can I get a reward sheet for the NeoExodus Legacies Campaign? You may find the Legacy Record on that link.

Running on Free RPG Day

During Free RPG Day (or any time-constraint environment), describe the PCs’ journey through the jungle over 10 days. To represent the jungle madness, have the PCs make a DC 11 Will save or take 1d6 points of Wisdom damage before moving on to the next encounter.

Wave the rolls for random encounters, describe how the PCs fight some of the local monsters.

Why? Although fun and very old-school, it does not really add to the plot happening in the adventure.

Random Shots/ Mini-FAQ

Where can I get the pregens? You may download the iconics here

Should I be shouting when speaking in Enuka? Please be mindful of other. Speak loudly and project your voice (think of Billy Mays and other TV salesmen who seems to always be shouting, but are really not). Enuka use simple words and sentences. Oh, and they only use exclamation points for punctuation.

What's the DC to climb the pyramid? Let's call it a 15.

This is WAY too hard! Feel free to swap the location and size of rooms G and H to be nice to your players. But I would not recommend it.

Why are the First Ones so evil? There is a reason everyone rose up against the First Ones. They are NOT nice people.

Where can I get more adventures? There are already a number of them available on our website, with more coming.

Is there a place I can report what my table did? Yes, send an email to FirstOnes@NeoExodus.com. What your party did may end up integrated into the storyline for NeoExodus Legacies!

Can I run the full adventure on Free RPG Day? Yes you can, but some of your players may wish to play other events during the day, please "play nice".

How long does the full adventure run for? Depending on the GM's roll, it might take up to 8 hours or so. During the play-test, we got

NeoExodus Kickstarter Plea! It's ending!

Despite being very close to the NeoExodus Free RPG Day Kickstarter project, I try not to inundate your inboxes with pleas about it, but now that it is about to end, I allow myself to make one last plea to you.

We have reached funding level but there are a number great things left to unlock. If you can, please give, you will receive and bring the fun of the game to a lot of people around the world.

Plus, as a secret goal, I plan on running a For-Backers only playtest of the adventure (available only in Colorado, Montreal/Ottawa and Phoenix, Az at this time), where YOU will be able to provide me with your thoughts, insights and get to influence the adventure. Playtests are very important to me as they provide a dynamic model of the game in play. If I can entice you that way, I'm willing to do it.

If you can, please back our project, the core is written (so we're not gonna flake out). It needs play-testing, art and editing. So there is little to no risk for you! There are great stretch goals left to attain: Lee Hammock (from Goblinworks) and Richard Farrese (now from Ubisoft/Assassin's Creed 3) could add to the adventure!

Here is the link.

Kickstarter home stretch and NeoExodus play opportunities

We are now in the home stretch of the Kickstarter for the Free RPG Day adventure, Temple of the Forbidden God. It's been a wild ride, and one I am rather happy with. But allow me to make this plea to you once more: if you can pledge, please do!

As I posted last week, the base adventure is written (so the risks to you as a backer drops significantly, we have a pre-edit manuscript you will get as a backer). Thus you will see how the adventure goes from initial to finished product.

With that said, I will also be creating a Legacy Record to allow you to play the adventure and get rewarded for it in our organized play campaign. This will give you even more playing opportunities to discover NeoExodus with us!

Speaking of NeoExodus play opportunities... Nimon has a PBP up on Paizo.com that seems very interesting! He could use a few more players for sure! Check it out.

Petries' Family Games are hosting a day of Introduction to NeoExodus this coming Saturday. Cam and I have been speaking about it for almost two months now and I can't wait for the event to happen! If you are in Colorado... you really should come and check it out!

Inspirations for our Free RPG Day Adventure

If you followed my tweets the past two weeks, you know that I am hard at work trying to finish the "Temple of the Forbidden God", our Free RPG Day 2013 Kickstarter (as a shameless plea, if you haven't given, now would be a good time to do so while there is still time!). And finally last night I tweeted an "I'M DONE!"

Well mostly done. I have completed the first draft - the toughest of all drafts to finish - and am currently playing around with it, tweaking, changing and overall making better.

I will soon be contacting (me and/or LPJ will) our backers in Colorado to run a play-test of the adventure! Talk about a chance to get MORE than "your name in the book" but "to be part of the writing too!!!" So there I said it. Extra opportunity for goodies! Contact me and/or LPJ if you have a group of backers near where you live so you can play-test it for us.

Though these are not strictly part of the adventure, the following illustrations were more than instrumental in the writing of "Temple of the Forbidden God". For those of you familiar with NeoExodus, images of the wild Reis Confederacy should quickly come to mind. And you would be correct... Part of the adventure takes place in the Confederacy.

Part of my design, included a way to seamlessly integrate the awesome stretch goals we hoped to reach (Owen KC Stevens reached YEAH!). I can only hope that we reach Lee Hammock and Richard Farrese, two of the guys who did a LOT of work on NeoExodus in its initial incarnation. I would just LOVE to work with them and make "Temple" into something just MASSIVE.

*Girlish giggle*

Writer's block sucks!

For the past few weeks I've been either putting down ideas for our Free RPG Day Kickstarter or actively writing the adventure. I have a lot of great ideas, LPJ and I came up with (you'll remember I posted a lot about it over the past few months). I have a number of encounters written, a cool premise, a set up for Owen Stevens and Lee to make the adventure even bigger and MORE awesome. I mean this is one of my favorite adventures so far, up there along with Cold Visitor.

Then Tuesday it hit me.

The dreaded writer's block.

Oh no, not the "I have nothing more to write about this" block but the "how am I gonna fit all this in here" block. I need to remove material and change a few things around to be able to fit as much of it as I can. And that's where the problem lies. What do I take out before putting it in?

Very annoying.

So taking and alternative route to just plugging in stuff I wasn't sure would fit, I took some of the elements I thought were "more generic" (and it sounds really strange to write this) and added them to another adventure I have been working on. This has effectively allowed me to "get out of my system" some of the encounters I felt would've been contrived and forced into "Temple".

This is a technique I learned from a fellow writer who said that he always keeps a few small projects to advance when the writers' block hits. It really works! Now I have a number of new ideas for "Temple".

And I'm at my day job... so those ideas will have to wait.

DANG IT!

Cynean models by Crocodile Games

I am posting a number of Cynean models by Crocodile games. Cyneans are crystalline entities with a strong bend towards arcane magic. Now though they are crystalline, they are nevertheless humanoids.

Cyneans are a popular race for players; many have created characters: from magus, to sorcerers, to machinesmiths, to fighters, and oracles. Cyneans are - in my opinion - the most popular PC race in NeoExodus (with P'tan coming a close second). Surprisingly, I find that we have used them sparingly as NPCs. Don't read into it, but that might change...

Now for the first two models... You will notice they are of the same model. The story for this one quite interesting: a group of us had traveled to Denver to play-test the two adventures for GenghisCon. Upon our return, we stopped at Gamers' Haven where we browsed their collection of Crocodile game model - after I told the guys that they made GREAT models for NeoExodus, namely their "To-Tanem" range for Cyneans and the "Basti" for P'tan. I will add their Sebeki for the First Ones' Krocas also... But I'll blog about then later...

So there we found two To-tanem characters... These are just AWESOME for machinesmiths. I planned on purchasing one and Brian the other, when Brian-B offered me a deal I could not refuse: he'd buy me one if I painted one for him. Well... that was deal I could not pass on! So I painted the two models differently: one red and one blue. With a few different accents here and there the two came out really nice and surprisingly different! Now I can't decide which one I want so I will offer both to Brian and let him decide!

I said Cyneans were very popular, well as proof of this, my good friend Martin-B also has a Cynean character: his is a magus. I took the model below and cut out his spear to replace it with a flaming sword from the pack in the above machinesmith pack. That's another thing I like about Crocodile Games: their Wargods of Aegyptus packs come with a number of unique little trinkets and bitz. I kept the sword somewhat dark to further contrast the brightness of the flames.

The final one is a "hero" I plan to keep for myself. A warrior with a strange flail-hammer weapon. I just might have to create this weapon and add it to the player's guide... This one will be a cool addition to my collection.

Fiction: Prologue to Temple of the Forbidden God

As I was putting things together for "Temple of the Forbidden God". I came up with this little prologue to - and I will admit it - put myself in the right frame of mind. I'll admit it worked! LPJ posted it as an update to our Kickstarter.

We have reached our basic funding goal - thanks everyone - but do not stop so we can reach higher levels. LPJ and I keep joking that "the more we get, the more I have to work!"

An Enuka's Tale

The enuka tribes of the northern Wyldlands of Bal believe that the mists covering the area to the north can swallow one’s soul. The stories are highly colorful, filled with enormous monsters, heroic acts of bravery and tragic endings.

One tribe, the Red Fangs of Lake Ozomatli, possesses a scale that towers over the biggest of their hunter. If the stories are true, a warrior of great renown left for the mists and brought it back after years spent there. He returned suffering from a wasting disease no shaman could heal; no herb could sooth the terrible pain that wracked his body. As he lay dying and delirious, he told stories of a dragon so massive that its head rested above the clouds and its tail reached beyond the horizon. Enukas came from leagues around to hear the tales of his adventures and his fantastic descriptions of the colossal monster.

His many tales were carved into the scale in the simple script of the Enukan language to pass them on to generations of enukas.

To this day, those planning to travel into the mists seek the Red Fangs to view the scale and ponder the tales and descriptions. Scholars deliberate on the colorful language used and the complex metaphors rarely found in the Enuka’s tongue.

Nine-Fingers sniffed the air looking for a jungle boar. However, the scent he caught was different. There was something out of place in the slight breeze. From his perch high above the jungle floor, he tried to pinpoint its origin. He sniffed to his right and his left before settling on his right. His senses on edge, he leapt to another branch then another, approaching the source of that new smell.

Someone. Yes, someone. A human? It’s been months since a human came to these parts. There are no humans here. Yes, this was the smell of man. Man is trouble, better be prepared, Nine-Fingers thought to himself pulling out his obsidian-lined war club.

The Enuka swung through the thick jungle following his nose, ignoring the other scents. Nine-Fingers did not see the human until he was almost on top of him. The man was in the Atoyatli River, the creek-where-the-water-flows-black, caught in creeping vines where they reach into the river. If left alone, the vines would strangle the man before eating him.

Nine-Fingers used his war club to cut the vines and release the man. Sure, the vines fought back, but his mighty war cry and raw power allowed the Enuka to triumph easily. He roared his victory with a deep and powerful growl, before remembering why he was doing so.

Jumping into the shallow but swift black waters, he pulled the man out onto the shore. The man’s golden skin was covered in mud and festering wounds. Nine-Fingers washed the man’s face, revealing tattoos on his skin. Tattoos that moved. Tattoos of letters.

The Enuka jumped back pulling his obsidian-lined war club, cursing in surprise. He looked at his hands to make sure the magic had not spread to him. Satisfied they had not transferred to him he poked the man again with his club, grunting a greeting in the tongue of man. The man’s eyes opened with obvious effort, and he groaned. A raspy grunt exited his lips, forcing the enuka to come closer. Nine-Fingers’ eyes flew open in a mix of terror and awe, as he understood what the man said.

Sheathing his war club on his back, he grabbed the man under his left arm and quickly ascended the trees where he began swinging from branch to tree branch to vine towards his village. Moving as fast as an enuka ever moved through the thick jungles of the Wyldlands of Bal, Nine-Fingers could not wait to speak with the Elder. The elder, yes the elder would know what to do.

Nine-Fingers reached the edge of the clearing where the females grew rice and he howled his arrival. Immediately, a number of females approached him, war clubs in hand. He ordered them to get the Elder as he gently placed the man on his back. The females stared at the man Nine-Fingers rescued from the river.

Nine-Fingers refused to let them come too close, which only tickled their curiosity even more.

Finally, the elder arrived with one of the younger females. Ordering everyone back, the elder kneeled close to the still unconscious man for a closer examination. The moving letters intrigued him. They did not form words – at least any word that remained for very long. Looking up to the hunter, the elder grunted an inquiry about the man.

Nine-Fingers’ answer was simple and brought fear to every enuka in range.

"It’s the First Ones."

What do you think?

NeoExodus Free RPG Day Kickstarter Kick-Off!

And it's a go! LPJ started our Kickstarter a little early I guess my excitement about the project got to him and he just had to get it on track!

You'll notice that I have placed a tracker on the page (top right) to allow people to get there... Who am I fooling? Its so I can one-click to there! As more and more people give, he will unveil some more goodies for all.

Now I have to get to writing for the promised goodies!

NeoExodus Free RPG Day Kickstarter approved

Well it seems things are coming together for the year. LPJ got approval by Kickstarter for our next big thing: a new NeoExodus adventure for Free RPG Day. I already gave you a few teasers in a previous post, but now we have a name and some more art for it.

The title, I'll admit not being overly fond of, but it's growing on me. From the art you can see the unmistakable shape of a Kobura, one of the First Ones!

One of the things about our idea is that it will be greatly influenced by you guys in the sense that there will be the Free RPG Day (I can't remember the exact number of pages) product but based on the Kickstarter, we'll add more stuff to the adventure. I don't have the specifics fully down just yet (LPJ handles all that while I focus on completing my work for the next round of adventures for Legacies). But preliminary discussion make me very excited about what we'd might see as the finished, completed product...

Is there anything you would like to see in the adventure? A monster? A location?

What does the title make you think of?

Let me know.

NeoExodus Free RPG Day 2013 takes shape

Just a quick word to let you know that LPJ has posted an avatar for the upcoming Kickstarter for Free RPG Day 2013. You can see the it to the right.

We have a basic idea of what we want to do and have plans for expanding the adventure... Should be really cool. I'm pretty excited about it! I really hope we go through a lot of stretch goals because the basic idea is FULL of potential! I mean we're talking big time. This will also be the first time I work on a project of the sort. I read plenty of similar products, but this one will be the first one I work on myself.

I can safely say that the current plans are for an exploration-based adventure. After last year's successful "Undying Legacy of the First Ones" (which I really like running) we have to top ourselves.

A few constraints I will impose on myself: the adventure must serve as an introduction to NeoExodus, it must present some of the setting's unique elements, it must have a fun story, and finally it will be allowed as part of the NeoExodus Legacies campaign (meaning you will get rewards for your Legacies character by playing).

I can't wait to start writing the adventure! More playtests on the way!

So exciting!

Update: Obsidian Apocalypse, zombie hordes and invid

This week has just been crazy for me. Real work has been crazy - I won't go over the details. Suffice to say that I have put a lot of hours.

To add to that the work I have to do for NeoExodus results in my having very little free time. I have so many projects going on at once: NeoExodus Legacies (3 adventures in the works), finishing adventures that came back from the editor, doing some work on Obsidian Apocalypse and trying to fit in my family into that.

I have been thinking a lot about Obsidian Apocalypse lately. I had ideas on how to build a cool and unique campaign out of it. I'll get LPJ to scream but to me, what I love about Obsidian Apocalypse and why I wanted to be part of the project was because in some way I see this a fantasy version of "The Walking Dead". Survival horror against endless hordes of dead is unique and extremely fun. For the same reason that I love the Robotech setting "Invid Invasion" (set before the "Return of the Invid crap"): everything you own is valuable and you have to find a way to get more stuff. I kid you not, I did look at my Palladium books for extra inspiration...

As a side project, I've been thinking about running a Robotech one-shot recently... I would be very interesting to revisit all my old Robotech material. I really loved that game... The rules could be improved on - and simplified to be less early-80s static, but the basic mechanics work well enough.

Ah... what a trip down memory lane!

But that is not what I've been doing. Maybe one day you will get a link to the adventure. Maybe. *sigh*

I submitted a template for OA undead a few months back as part of the Monster Contest (what do you mean you didn't participate!?) The template I provided tried to explain why a few high-level clerics would not channel the problem of the zombie hordes away. But it actually makes for cool story potential too.

I also tried to come up with some ways to do things other than what you usually see in Pathfinder/ D&D. Really make for a unique way to have replacement characters. After all in OA, you can't simply "walk into a bar and meet a mysterious elf who is looking for work."

What did I put in there? You'll have to wait for the book! I think that book will be SWEET!

When you least expected them: Inquisitions

One thing about running an organized play like NeoExodus Legacies is that you get into contact with aspects of the game you don't do much of. For example, I have yet to play an inquisitor. Simply because I keep coming up with concepts for other classes...

By my buddy Mike Wilson is thoroughly enamored with the class. One could say he's a living inquisitor...

As Mike was building his NeoExodus Legacies character, he emailed me asking me about which inquisitions related to which NeoExodus deity/Venerates. So while waiting for my turn during a near all-night adventure, I looked through the list of inquisitions in Ultimate Magic and came up with the following list.

So I'm talking the opportunity to put this up here and effectively give all of you a(nother) sample of the upcoming NeoExodus Player's Guide.

Drawing Maps for NeoExodus

A quick post about maps I drew. If you didn't know I am writing an adventure for the backers of the Dreamscarred Press Kickstarter (here is a link). the adventure - unsurprisingly - uses psionics - and cavians! If you didn't know, Cavians are a race of psionic rat-men in NeoExodus. They are genuinely creepy!

The maps were hand-drawn and then tweaked with Paint Shop Pro. I used a technique I found on a number of websites and that I recently saw on my buddy Mike Azzolino's twitter feed (Mr. San-Fran VC). That is to use alternating lines to show areas where the walls were. I think it looks good.

I posted three in-progress pictures of the map. Nope I won't post the final version just yet. I might decide to change it all... But I think it fits my needs fairly well.
