[Terrain] Little Rural Temple: Scratch-Built Temple for DND

This is a temple built in Greek style using caryatid columns in the shape of women. Could be Aphrodite, Hera, Athena, or even Artemis.

I built this one as a way to try out various techniques and materials. The result is more effective than I believed.

The columns and the altar were 3d printed while the rest was built using popsicle sticks and with the rook made of cardboard from a frozen pizza box.

It was great to get back into scratch-building things again.

[Terrain] Statues of Neptune/ Poseidon

These statues of Neptune/ Poseidon are based on a statue on the east coast of the US. I thought they would make great focal points and were painted to go with the rest of the ship graveyard.

I printed them before painting.

[Terrain] Ancient Ship Graveyard

During the Christmas holidays, I began working on something for Gencon... It is an ancient ship's graveyard inspired by the remains of ships at Purton in England. These remains jut out of the ground.

What will I use them for? I won't reveal too much but one of the Gencon adventure has a working title of "Re-leash the Kraken"...

[Terrain Friday] Obelisks

These obelisks are much different. The first two are from the same source. I did two that floated, but one fell on so I chose to keep only the top section and stuck it to a simple base... Kept those simple.

The second set had two intact ones and one that is broken (on purpose, not due to my own clumsiness).

[Terrain Friday] Statues Gallore!

These three statues all come from different sources.

The first one is a dark elf witch elf, but she will be used for the many icons of ArchDespot Hellebora who keep popping up everywhere in my games... This is a really awesome sculpt with a definite anime-vibe but one I really liked from the moment I saw it on Thingiverse.

The bull's head made me think of something beastly or even an Olympian deity. I debated putting blood upon it, but my first attempts simply sucked and just did not look good. So I opted for the easier "clean" stone.

Finally, the woman statue is incomplete - it is only partially carved - which is why the base is rough stone. Still it makes for a great statue of one of the Olympian goddesses - Aphrodite, Artemis, or even Demeter...

A small gift: The Poster Board

Last month, at the TEC center in Murfreesboro, a small group of new adventurers gathered for a Westmarches-inspired campaign. One main element of the campaign is the poster board with jobs offered.

Feeling inspired, I printed the board, painted it and added a few sheet of paper, mimicking the jobs that could be offered. I gave this to Kelly, our peerless organizer!

Thanks Kelly!

[Friday Terrain] The City Gates

When I did the other gates, I kept this third one out of the picture. To this one, I added magnets to allow the door to open and close. The doors do not come with the arch and are something I decided to modify myself. I think it will be interesting to use in a game.

[Terrain Friday] Barrels, chests, crates, and barricades

I printed many "random bits" of boxes, crates, chests, and barrels from a variety of creators. Some were barricades and others singles I glued together.

They can serve a wide variety of uses across many games, time periods, and places. I did a simple paint job that really looks great when put together in large numbers. I really like the overall effect. Be prepared to see them on game tables soon...

Only the barrels stacked together had printing issues... I debated throwing them away but now after a coat of pain, they work well enough and the deformations aren't as obvious as they are from close up.

[Terrain Friday] (Start of) The Ozakan Village

These Japanese-style houses on stilts were printed and painted for use with Ozaka. They depict the "Rice" and "Food" kanjis.

The little bridge (of which another appeared previously) really adds to the overall look and makes it look like ancient Japan.

[Terrain Friday] Huts and village

The following are a collection of huts and houses. The round ones are two different styles: one made of bricks and the other made of wood.

The two larger structures are the same model with tweaked dimensions. The simple paint job really came through beautifully. It really comes through. I gave them multiple brushings to give them that look.

[Terrain Friday] Runes stones and Sphinxes

These pieces are scatter terrain. The stones have magical runes over them, meaning they can be used for a variety of things. I decided to go with a whiter colored stone to break from the grey.

And as a personal painting challenge.

[Terrain Friday] Great Arches

These not-so-small pieces are massive archways as scatter terrain. There are so many uses for them. They were very large and a challenge to print on my small printer.

[Terrain Friday] Barn and Fences

Small pieces of scatter terrain. This barn was a multi-part and the hay bales fit inside, allowing up to 10 bales to fit inside, making the barn usable multiple ways.

[Titan Tuesday] Ypogeios the centipede-hydra monster

More goodies for Gencon.

Ypogeios is a kaiju-sized titan that resembles a massive centipede-hydra. Let that sink in a little...

This piece was from a trade I did with someone at the end of last Gencon (sorry, I cannot remember your name). The piece was a titanesque scorpion, which I planned to use as a monster in one of the specials for this year.

Then it fell after I placed it in an awkward position. Curses and bad words flew from my mouth as my plan evaporated. I took the pieces, placed them in a pile and I left it there for a while. Then around Xmas, after I sent my game entries to Gencon... The pieces suddenly began to make more sense. It was time to start doing some work to use the shards and make them into something new and exciting.

The Olympia Campaign Setting can be the home of any number of monsters and creatures you can imagine.

[Gencon 2022] Terrain Friday Crystals 4

Terrain for Gencon. What are these crystals for? What are their impact upon Olympia?

These were done with toy gems and a few random bits.

[Gencon 2022] Terrain Friday Crystals 3

Terrain for Gencon. What are these crystals for? What are their impact upon Olympia?

I made this floating crystal with the broken piece from Crystal #2 (I think it was Hypericon 2018).

[Gencon 2022] Terrain Friday Crystals 2

Terrain for Gencon. What are these crystals for? What are their impact upon Olympia?

I received this crystal for free as a broken piece at a convention in Nashville (I think it was Hypericon 2018).

Doctor Who: The Tardis

Continuing Will's collection of Doctor Who characters and mini-scenery with the Tardis, inside and out. I decided to take "action pictures" where the Doctor and his companions are just about to head out on an adventure.

Starting inside, the Doctor and his companions discuss where they are: a strange new planet. This scene inside the Tardis features the control panel. Painting some random indicators, graphs and colorful buttons. Two things annoyed me as I painted this. First, I had no idea how to base the model. It was not outside, but INSIDE. And from my memory, the TARDIS floor is plain white. Maybe I could've used a smaller base... But now that it is done, I really like the larger and stabler base.

The Tardis posed an interesting challenge as a painter. It is monochromatic, all blue. So what I did was to start with a darker blue and then using wet overbrush, I made at least four layers. The result is a multi-layered blue that is impossible to capture on camera. Then I did the "Police" headers, then the light atop the Tardis, and finished with the glass panes.

I had a kick-ass Tardis in need of a base. I left it alone for a while as I thought about what I would do.

As I finished the rest of the minis, I decided how I wanted to paint the bases. My inspiration was "Skarro" during Genesis of the Daleks, my favorite serial of all time. (See a picture of the planet nearby) I used a base of dark grey, then very light grey for highlights with scattered tufts of flock to represent the low grass and brushes.

However, for the TARDIS, I decided to add odd-colored water, presenting the TARDIS as it landed in puddles. I started a real water color but used a series of different colors to make it look alien. I must say the final result is awesome and made me want to ask "where are we now?" and "What happened here?" Isn't that the prelude to a good Doctor Who episode?
