[Kinda Book Report] Jeanne La Male Reine Vol 2

Continuing the story of Jeanne. Following the death of Philippe The Fair, Jeanne now goes from being a relunctant manipulator to a full-on schemer. She does horrible things to work to get the throne.

I mean... horrible...

Now several points presented here are conjectures and accusations that were leveled against her. Still, they are presented here in the most natural of ways. Namely the fate of Charles IV's son (the only legitimate grandson of Philippe Le Bel).

This book also presents the situation of the Salic Law, wherein the French Crown may only be passed through the male line, skipping females. With several strong cadet branches of the royal family, many of whom had decent claims to the throne - Valois, Artois, Bourgogne. The situation is primed for conflict.

In the 1314-25 period, Philippe had 3 sons, who would each succeed to him on the throne, none of them having a legitimate son to succeed him. They died in strange circumstances - leading to a famous French series of books "Les Rois Maudits" by Maurice Druon (The Cursed Kings).

That period would see the end of the Capetian Dynasty (which ruled for ~340 years) and see the rise of the Valois Dynasty (which would rule for another ~270). Even though the Comte de Valois was Philippe Le Bel's brother, this was a massive shift in the power dynamics of the kingdom.

Orchestrated by... Yup. Jeanne.

Wherein tome 1, she may come across as someone forced by circumstances, this is not longer the case. We find a woman in full control of herself, who makes all the men around her dance to her tune.

I really like France Richemond's treatment of history (which brought me to this series). Making this tale interesting and exciting. Jeanne is a plotter, but so are the many great matrons of the era, and they play for and against each other with a finesse that is delightful.

For those who thought women were useless dainty little flowers... They can be... Jeanne.

The Art and the storytelling... 5/5!

[Kinda Book Report] Jeanne La Male Reine Vol 1

Jeanne La Male Reine translate to Evil Queen Joan

The English-speaking world knows about the War of the Roses. A similar dynastic drama happened in France 150 years before, when King Philippe IV Le Bel (the Fair), a harsh man by all accounts ruled. The House of Valois had ruled for ~340 years at that point. The King had 3 sons, and a daughter (who would be Queen of England), his rule and continuation assured.

Played against the events that led to the Avignon Papacy, the arrest and trials of the Knights Templar, the imprisonment of the Princesses (where Philippe's daughters-in-law were accused of adultery, all three of them!), and the death of the king and rise of his son Louis X le Hutin (the Quarrelsome).

Our story focused on Jeanne who is born with a foot defect that leaves her lame her whole life. Intelligent and charming, her family has a hard time finding her a husband because of her condition.

Then one day, she meets Philippe de Valois, Philippe Le Bel's nephew (by his brother).

Our story has her make a pact with the devil's envoy to marry Philippe de Valois. And the two have a very loving relationship - something most other noblewomen admit jealousy towards her as they love. Jeanne embraces her role as an agent of the devil.

We close the story on Jeanne admitting to her husband that she wants to be Queen. He doesn't refuse, saying that "We are happier and freer as we are now..."

If I have one criticism of this story is that it sometimes go by REALLY quickly with major elements advancing time really quickly. But the art and the story is quite interesting and draws you in.

This is a clear 4.5/5, but due to math, I have to round up to 5/5.

[Kinda Book Report] Marvel Spider-Woman Essential Vol 1

I got the book at a sizeable discount about a character I knew only through her appearance in Freedom Force in the 80s. Turns out it wasn't even the same Spider-Woman! Oh well...

This is a strange book with a character that doesn't seem to know what she's about.

The first five-ish issues deal with her being a former Hydra agent, a girl injected with spider DNA and evolved. She deals with things, but isn't the one doing most of the work.

Then she gets involved with several magic stories - Morded (no R), Morgana le Fey, and a Merlin-like figure, while she has no magic abilities herself. We follow up with a "slice of life" story, until she becomes a bounty hunter, chasing random criminals. Each time, the cast around her changes completely.

Unlike Ms Marvel who had a life, a love life, and villains. Spider-Woman has none of these. Her life changes completely every 5-ish issues. The major villains - the Brothers Grim - are dealt with and done once revealed.

This is a character in search of a reason to exist. Were it not for the competent art, this would be a pile of hot garbage.

I will settle on 2/5 mostly because the art is nice. And Spider-Woman is a hottie...

[Response] Jacob's comments on Ozaka

Jacob posted this on DrivethruRPG: (paragraph breakdown is mine since DT removed all line breaks).

So, some constructive criticism... I saw your game at MidSouthCon (I was one of the two who couldn't make it to your morning game!) and decided to take a look at your game even if I couldn't be in it. Me 'n my BF have been reading through it, and we have a few thoughts.

My BF has phrased it the most bluntly: Ozaka needs to commit more to either being Classic Japan But With DnD Fantasy, or being Wild Dungeon-Crawl Fantasy In Magical Demiplane Japan. You have the basis for either of those, but there are a few things that keep either idea from soaring. If you want to feel like old-school Japan, you've taken out too much of the interesting parts of old Japan for them to pop. I understand not wanting to burden players with honor or bushido, but... really, suddenly having to care about another culture's social mores that you haven't internalized would make some great gameplay, which is why L5R focused on that.

Likewise, trying to feel like this period of Japan also blocks the "oh by the way Magic Missile and Cure Light Wounds are abundant" weirdness of it. I know you don't like characters that are inherently "scary" or would cause friction with the locals, but it feels extremely weird that warlocks get a pass when they're seemingly on the supply side of Ozaka's monster problem. If you really don't want to engage with old social mores or social constructs (the lack of the state religions really jumped out at my BF as something that made the game feel very not-like-Japan), I'd advise a revision of the game leaning into the fantasy-weirdness and making something less historically Japanese but more bizarre and exciting: "the demiplane of Hong Kong and all its precariously dangerous politics" would make for an exciting smaller-scale 5e setting whether the characters were locals or visitors.

If you want to really engage with Japan-but-it's-5e, I'd advise excising the more Euro-Fantasy classes (...mostly the non-bard magic-users) and relying on your homebrew casters to help convey the feeling of a world that isn't just not-Europe.

The overall presentation of the game is good and you've got some good art and functional layout. I am, admittedly, also not a fan of 5e, so seeing your game work with 5e-isms instead of break out from them frustrates me a little. You have the start of something really cool here, and I'd love to see it bloom outward into something that really draws eyes across a crowd.

Thanks, Jacob. A lot to unpack here.

TLDR: I took a middle-of-the-road approach, but whenever I had a choice, I picked that “let the GM decide for his/her game.” Also, I tried to be cognizant of future class/player options that may come in later books.

First off, thanks for your purchase and feedback.

Second, you will have an opportunity to try the adventure at Gencon (search for "Legacies First Ones Entertainment") when the games become available. It'll be called "Fiends of Dreams," but there will be 3 other adventures set in Ozaka: "A Stolen Daisho," "Friends we make," and "Battle of Shiro Azaki."

The points you note about 5e-isms and the design of the settings are among the elements I had to determine early on as I laid the foundation for Ozaka. Do I write my own game or use 5e (or Pathfinder or GURPS)? The decision to go with core 5e was a deliberate one (driven by sales and game attendance). Which brought some oddities and 5e-isms with it, I agree. But do they detract from the enjoyment of the game? I think moreso while reading the book than when playing.

HOWEVER, if you look at the design of the book itself and skip the sections on character options/ monsters, you will find that the setting itself was written in a non-system-specific way. (Also deliberate). As such, the setting itself has no stat or system built into it.

I don't want to create a full game - don't have the time, people, or interest in doing that. So that decision has worked well for me and for FOE. As I write more and more, I find my role is to provide YOU, the GM, with the tools to create a compelling campaign for your table. Which WILL be different from another table. And that’s fine

That’s great!

The Honor system... Ha... Yes... I wrestled with that more than anything else. Being a fan of the original Oriental Adventures and of L5R (where that is less burdensome), I remember its system for honor, which became almost a mini-game in itself, with everything the player did adding +1, -2, +3, etc. I like the game to focus on... It inevitably led to its abandonment, or seppuku. And going back to “regular D&D where I don’t have to deal with that crap.”

Let the PCs do [stuff], rather than count beans for every off-colored joke or thinking of a dishonorable plan. Samurai were honorable, but also practical men. Let the world/story deal with the consequences of their acting like bandits, burning towns, stealing from temples, and the world around them treating them like garbage for it. Therefore, I chose this "light" system.

Okay, okay.

"But JP, you don't have a system for honor," you say. I admit. I present the concept, but let the story dictate how it's used. I prefer the less rigid approach to the rules (where my old-school roots shine through), and let the players do their thing - but now they have to worry about their honorability. I chose to place the onus of adjudication in the GM’s hands and to dictate the consequences.

Now... for "realism" vs "magic missile." I have spent years trying to create material historical gaming, and experience taught me that most people want to PLAY and don't want a HISTORY LESSON. As proof: The GURPS historical supplements are great. I have several of them that I read regularly. Whoever played them? No one. (Not sorry to the one guy who played it). Why? Because people have a passing knowledge of these subjects, and when they come to play RPG, they want the Japan-flavored D&D. Not the full-on Japan where the GM must spend 1h of the game slot explaining how it works, but that doesn't factor into the GAME.

I do.

Players don’t. They want to do “cool things.” (and they should be given the opportunity to do that.)

You are 100% correct that warlocks should be hunted. However, there are several types of warlocks that don’t deal with fiends or Cthulhu. There are some with angelic or divine ties. Would those be treated the same? How would the average person know of the pact vs a sorcerer? Or a strange type of bard? What happens if a daimyo is a warlock? Or one who becomes one? Or his wife? Would it be the same in Kobochi, Makida, or Midori? What about the Wakou?

Again. That leads to “the GM will decide for his campaign,” the story, and story potential dictating what should happen.

About the state religion. It is in there, perhaps not explicitly stated as such. The 5 gods of the pantheon (plus the Thousand Gods) are the only deities presented and discussed in the book.

I do not mind scary characters, don’t look at anything with the First Ones... (Power is Fickle, Tarsyn, Akhamet). What I mind are characters/players who have whole side-games designed around them. For example, the rogue who sneaks everywhere and never works with the party. Or the player who plays an orc just to get the NPCs to react to him. EVERY NPC.

Now, I’d LOVE to talk to you more about this. You can find my email on FoeLegacies.com (I can’t post it here). We can zoom/discord/phone. I’d like to hear about your idea for the Hong Kong setting…

I think I addressed everything. But let’s talk. I wanna pick your brain.

After Action Report: Midsouthcon 41 in Memphis TN

Midsouthcon 41 is in the books. ActionMan and I headed out Friday afternoon to get settled and be ready ahead of time. Since, the con took place in a new, different, hotel. We settled, and headed to the con.

Friday evening, I participated in two panels: one about horror RPGs and one on character background, and I sat in on a few others.

The Horror panel went really well as we discussed how to succeed at doing horror in RPGs, and noted several types of horror that does not work on the tabletop. Freddy Krueger comes to mind.

My "Background" panel didn't happen since no one came. Sad. However, I talked with my fellow panelists about my Four Questions background.

Before the panels, I realized that I lost my notebook. The one where I put in all my notes (for the panels) but also in which I practiced my maps drawings and adventure making. I was in something of a panic, but following my panels, I ran to Con Operations and some kind soul had returned it. Wooo!

At the end of the evening, I spent time on Pro-Row and got to speak with Buddy Katie from Star Pod Trek and the USS Athena. Always a pleasure to talk to them and about potential projects. We keep meeting at cons and it is always a pleasure.

Meanwhile, ActionMan played a game of Vaesen. He seemed to have a great time of it. He didn't tell me much, other than he made "a few bad rolls" and things went bad for him.

We slept.

Well HE slept. His freight-train snoring kept me up most of the night!

Saturday morning, we got a quick McD breakfast and headed to the RPG room. I ran the Gencon Ozaka adventure, then the Gencon Tarsyn adventure, this time to finalize them (I had play-tested them previously). This play-test confirmed how my changes were real good. I found a few oddities that requires clarifying, but the flow issue I had were now resolved!

ActionMan played some 5e and Call of Cthulhu (IIRC) during the day.

After that, both ActionMan and I played more Vaesen. I played one and he played another. The game is fun, definitely something I would be willing to play one-shots or at cons. I'm not sure if I'd be interested in playing this in a campaign or even less likely: run it myself.

We hit the room, he snored, I kept waking.

Sunday, we hit the road, stopped at a Waffle House in Dickson TN before making it home.

We both had a great time at MSC and plan on going back next year.

[Kinda Book Review] Dragonlance: The Inheritance

I picked up a several cheap book in the bargain bin of my local library.

It tells the tale of the meeting of Tanis Half-elven's parents. It's not an adventure novel. It's a romance.

It is full of filler Did you know the stonelands were dry? Because there's no water. There are rocks. No rivers. Because it's dry. There are caves. Caves without water. It's barren. The goblins live there. The hobgoblin has three villages. The goblin villages. Without water.

Now, to be honest, the one battle I read through was well written an interesting, but this is a book that spend so much time trying to explain the world around it because its premise is weak and limited. This should've been a short story.

I stopped reading it because I lost interest in the characters. I don't care for the poor kidnapped princess. Or the bandits. It's just... Pfffff Boring. Well-crafted but ultimately not something that's worth my time.

2/5.

The caves are dry. Because there's no water. With rocks. No stream. Not a single farm. In the Stoneland where it's dry. With the three goblin villages.

[Kinda Book Review] Dragonlance Tales v3 Love and War

This is a collection of ten tales set in Dragonlance is a mixed bag. I believe the best tale is the first one. The headline tale, "Raistlin's Daughter" left me indifferent.

One thing this collection brought up is that the characters from the original Chronicles: Tas, Flint, Sturm, and Raistlin, have had so many tales told about them that we know they have plot armor. No matter how much a story puts any of them in danger will I ever really worry for their lives.

As a collection, it's a mixed bag. Not great.

Rating? 2/5. Read the first tale, and skip the rest.

[Campaign Challenge 2026, Day 27] RPG Campaign Tour Challenge

Do you have any amusing anecdotes from the campaign?

Of course:
- Vulcanus smashing a stone stelae revealing a bound balor within.
- When Grimnak turned from a gnoll to a demonic version of himself.
- Terrificus grabbing Queen Livia's chest.
- When Dame Sabine arrived and half the party began to drool.

[Campaign Challenge 2026, Day 26] RPG Campaign Tour Challenge

Are there any dramatic events from the campaign you can share?

The biggest recent event was the assault on the Tower of St Edras by Grinmak The Bloody's gnoll army. The warlord allied himself with the Black Widow and used several allies, including goblins, troglodytes and enslaved people chained together.

The massive battle ended with the gnolls getting beaten back with severe damage to the Tower.

Where can I do some shopping?

Commerce in Darveshnagar is mostly done through the Bazaar of the Twelve Arches run by Faridun and his family. The bazaar is open during the day, but is closed at night.

Faridun maintains contacts with several people in Tarsyn, Darveshnagar, and the hinterlands, to allow for the movement of goods, serving as an intermediary.

[Campaign Challenge 2026, Day 24] RPG Campaign Tour Challenge

What are the major imports to the area?

Darveshnagar has a tenuous access to food and weapons. This are in high demand.

Since population is low, soldiers and mercenaries are in high demands.

Monday, February 23, 2026

[Campaign Challenge 2026, Day 23] RPG Campaign Tour Challenge

What are the major exports of the region?

Darveshnagar has fields of flax and exports both its flour and textiles.

Tell us about notable flora and fauna!

Near Darveshnagar, two forests exists: The Pistaccio Woods and the Juniper Woods.

Otherwise, most of the area is home to hearty bushes and the occasional olive trees. Otherwise, dry grasses are found everywhere, serving as fodder for the goats.

The area is home to many goats, horses, and camels.

[Campaign Challenge 2026, Day 21] RPG Campaign Tour Challenge

What are the major organizations of the campaign? How do they deal with visitors?

There are four main organizations active in the Campaign.

The Crown Table is present in the campaign, led by the First One Sir Garrick of the Order of the Whip. Since the Knights of St Edras made an official alliance, Dame Sabine de Montrevault serves as liaison to the group.

Another organization are the Komnenoi, a mercantile alliance led by Alexion Phokas, who was the last Truskan Viceroy of Tarsyn.

The third group is led by the Order of St Argent, an order of knighthood promoting the Vespianic Church.

The final group is composed of several criminals and bandits. The PCs have faced a few times, but not as a faction.

[Campaign Challenge 2026, Day 20] RPG Campaign Tour Challenge

Are there any mysteries as yet unsolved?

Ysoria la Voilee

The PCs have no idea of the goals or nature of Ysoria La Voilée.

There are hags in the area the PCs have yet to follow up on.

What are Claudia's true aim and goal?

Grimnark the Bloody's true nature?

[Campaign Challenge 2026, Day 18] RPG Campaign Tour Challenge

Forgot to ask: How do we get around?

Walking is the best way. However, riding is possible on the roads and closer to Darveshnagar.

Frequent caravans with wagons come from Mehrengar to the east regularity.

Tuesday, February 17, 2026

[Campaign Challenge 2026, Day 17] RPG Campaign Tour Challenge

The area around Darveshnagar has been mostly peaceful. However, the biggest battle in recent history was the destruction of the Tower of St Edras. The Crusader army came from the east and destroyed the tower before moving on to the Holy City itself. The village of Darveshnagar made no serious attempt to resist the invaders.

[Campaign Challenge 2026, Day 16] RPG Campaign Tour Challenge

Are there any direct threats?

Although it is much easier to say, politics are particularly cutthroats with the First Ones, their opponents, and several nobles and powerbrokers who vie for power. Being judicious with one's friend can really help.

Near Darveshnagar, the gnolls and bandits form a potent combination as they are an immediate, organized threat.

The gnolls are led by a particularly brutal leader called Grimnark the Bloody who organizes gnolls in the area, he is said to have support from gnolls from beyond the Mists.

The Mists are nearby, creating an impenetrable barrier where anyone who enters them vanishes, never to be seen again.

Sunday, February 15, 2026

[Campaign Challenge 2026, Day 15] RPG Campaign Tour Challenge

What are some things in the setting that are best avoided?

There are two powerful individuals the PCs know about:

Claudia SeverinaClaudia Severina is a powerful sorceress who lives is the ruin of Skotadion, a fortress always covered with dark clouds and where light dims and weakens. It is a bleak place most people avoid unless they have a specific reason to approach.

My players are suckers for hot goth girls as one of the PCs asked to make her his warlock patron.

I won't go into too much detail about her actual nature. But nothing bad could happen from that, would it?

Another threat is that of a power fey from Zapel Lake to the Southeast of Darveshnagar called Ysoria la Voilee. Many tales and rumors surround her.

The PCs have yet to explore more about her and her exact nature. They know she a Fey of power, but little else as they stayed away.

What to order to 'Eat like a local'?

Most Tarsynian eat large amount of grain and fowl, flavored with spices like cinnamon, pepper, or nutmeg. Meat is mostly goat as beef and pork are rare. However, there is no prohibition against any meat - at least not widespread.

The best drink is the wine, made from grapes and other fruits. Caravans traveling to other worlds can make large sums of money by bringing back rare foods, wines, and spirits to Tarsyn. Those coming from the original world of Tarsyn are particularly prized.

[Campaign Challenge 2026, Day 12] RPG Campaign Tour Challenge

What do people do for entertainment around here?

Entertainment is usually private, but traveling minstrels, poets, and performance artists are quite common. They visit local villages and noble estates, bringing news and merriment. The three main cultures of Tarsyn create a vibrant artistic community.

A new form of entertainment is growing as retired knights and adventurers tell tales of adventure and unique locations they visited beyond the Mists. Youths dream of quests and adventure beyond the limit of Tarsyn, returning with glory and riches.

[Campaign Challenge 2026, Day 11] RPG Campaign Tour Challenge

Where would we go to find 'adventure'?

In Darveshnagar, they are three main places: The local headsman, Rahim, usually has needs of a civic nature. The Copper Flagon, the local inn, if home to travelers and visitors. Finally, the Bazaar of the Twelve Arches is the commercial center of the town and another place to find adventure.

[Campaign Challenge 2026, Day 10] RPG Campaign Tour Challenge

What's the first thing we should do?

Upon arriving in Tarsyn, obtaining lodging is important. The city is large, and its streets are dangerous at night as gangs, cults, and riots are all common. Add to that the Order of the Whip brutally prevent vagrancy to keep the streets clean.

After that, one should visit the many holy sites: the cathedrals to the Father, the Lady, and the Son, and the Truskan temples. The city is a metropolis along the lines of Waterdeep, Greyhawk City, and Athenion. Mixing Constantinople, Jerusalem, and Ctesiphon as influences...

[Campaign Challenge 2026, Day 9] RPG Campaign Tour Challenge

Who's in charge here?

King Hugo rules Tarsyn, supported by his wife, Queen Livia. He is assisted by the Crown Table, his ruling council. They gather around a massive round table. *Wink* *Wink*

The knights formed an alliance with the Crown Table. The King dispatched one of his knight, Dame Sabine de Montrevault from the Order of the Whip, as his liaison and representative.

The group met with Queen Livia early in their adventures. She shared information with them about the Crown of Tears. Whether they will keep their deal with her remains to be seen.

Locally, the PCs are the lords of Darveshnagar and are expected to protect it.

[Campaign Challenge 2026, Day 8] RPG Campaign Tour Challenge

Tell us about the local people and their cultures.

There are three main cultures in Tarsyn:

Tarsynian The highly-cosmopolitan and highly-educated Tarsynian culture descends from a hodge-podge of people the city conquered and assimilated over the millenia. They are typically olive-to-dusky skinned with dark hair. They form the majority of the population.

Truskan The previous conquerors have settled in Tarsyn and intermarried with the local populace. They favor olive or bronzed skin with hair colors ranging from light-to-dark brown. Truskans are both militaristic and mercantile. They adapted their pantheon to match Tarsyn's.

Crusaders The Crusaders were once a distant part of the Tarsynian Empire but broke away, keeping the Vaspianic religion (Tasyn' main faith), but deifying the first Emperor as The Son. When word of troubles reached their lands, they mounted a huge army, joined by religious fervor that bordered on zealotry, and they crossed half the world to liberate Tarsyn from the Truskan invaders.

Crusaders have pale skins and eyes ranging from auburn to blonde to brown.

Although it would be simple to believe these three groups are at each others' throats, tensions tend to ease off and quiet down quickly because there are always "something bigger" that needs immediate attention.

[Campaign Challenge 2026, Day 7] RPG Campaign Tour Challenge

What's the weather like today?

The weather in Tarsyn is generally dry with short rainfall. Because Tarsyn is not in a plane, determining relies more on astrology and divination than on usual methods. After all... if you can't see beyond the Mists, how can you guess what weather comes?

[Campaign Challenge 2026, Day 6] RPG Campaign Tour Challenge

Where shall we start?

During Session Zero, I told the PCs that they were a fledgling band of would-be knights. (Knights being part of an order of knighthood).

They took their first job escorting supplies to a small border village. While on the road, they were attacked by troglodytes. After several challenges, they claimed the abandoned Tower of St Edras and took the name Knights of St Edras.

Thursday, February 5, 2026

[Campaign Challenge 2026, Day 5] RPG Campaign Tour Challenge

Can you tell us about the campaign's history?

Fifty years ago, the Truskan Empire conquered Tarsyn and settled it.

Ten years ago, the Crusaders, a group of people from the edge of the former empire mounted a religious expedition against the Holy City. After years of travel and conquest, they captured the city and established a kingdom for themselves in the city.

Five years ago, Tarsyn and its surrounding area was wretched from its location and pulled... somewhere within the Mists. Since then, the Crown Table (the king's ruling council) has been corrupted and became First Ones.

Locally, the Tower of St Edras was created by a religious order dedicated to the Vaspianic Church (main church of Tarsyn).

It was taken by the Crusaders and left as a ruin as their army moved on the city itself. Since its importance waned, no one bothered with it anymore.

In time, the tower was taken over by a band of troglodytes.

This is where the campaign starts...

There is, but I have not shared it with the players. They have to make one themselves! :D

Where the Heck are we?

The Campaign takes place on the western edge of Tarsyn near the village of Darveshnagar. The party took over the Tower of St Edras after taking it over from a clan of troglodytes that occupied it.

Nearby locations are:
- Zapel Lake which is home to Ysoria la Voilé, a powerful fey spirit.
- Skotadion is a hilltop fort always covered by a dark cloud.
- The Badlands is a rocky area full of canyons and ruins.
- Zapel Lake which is home to Ysoria la Voilé, a powerful fey spirit.

About your Tour Guide

Tarsyn is an "island" floating somewhere in the Multiverse that encompasses the Holy City and roughly thirty miles around. The area has a climate similar to the Levant: mostly dry.

Tarsyn: Lost Holy City is a campaign setting I co-wrote for First Ones Entertainment (FOE) that is inspired by mixing Arthurian Legends with the Crusades, with the city itself taking inspiration from Jerusalem, Constantinople, and Ctesiphon.

The "Island" floats in the Mists, which is a device that links all of FOE's settings. Similar to the Mists of Ravenloft, anyone who enters them, disappears. However, the Mists around Tarsyn sometimes "open" and allows passage to other planes simply by walking across.

So the campaign has some trips to other planes, local politics, and adventure!

My current campaign is set in the world of Tarsyn by First Ones Entertainment. It is called the Crown of Tears and is the subject of several posts with pictures of the game.

I am mixing elements of the campaign setting (Arthurian Legends and the Crusade) with elements of kingdom building, downtime, and Westmarch.

The Setting Tarsyn is highly cosmopolitan with people from all over the Multiverse making their way here. The party has/had characters from: Olympia, Ozaka, Tarsyn, and a pair of First Ones.

Kingdom Building Early in the campaign, the PCs found and abandonned tower they renovated and made themselves lords of the area, which includes the village of Darveshnagar.

Downtime: Every week, the players can call upon or do research themselves on a topic they want: NPCs, items, or locations and I send them information about that. They get some basic information about it, but sometimes, they get a "This is something you'll have to adventure for."

Westmarch: The PCs discuss what they found during downtime and most times, they get to decide what to do/ where to go. One key I found with this type of campaign is to make sure the party always has MORE hooks for adventure than they have time to do.

[Kinda Book Report] Marvel X-Factor Essential Vol 1

I first read this compilation back in 2019 (you can check out some of my thoughts in this classic post). However, in those days, I did not provide a more in-depth review.

The re-creation of X-Factor and the return of Jean Grey always fascinated me. I loved Phoenix as a character and her return prompted several questions. This tome answered them. It brought back the five original X-men: Angel, Beast, Cyclops, Iceman, and Marvel Girl under the guise of a group of mutant hunters.

Let's be honest, the idea sounded stupid to me as a child, and it still sounds dumb to me today...

Cyclops has a great storyline, with him leaving his wife and son for Jean. But for most of the issues, Angel, Beast, and Iceman are background characters who don't do much.

The highlight of this, beyond the return of Jean Grey, is the Mutant Massacre (of which I raved in this post). However, when I re-read the X-Factor-specific parts... I found it lacking and not as interesting as the X-Men. (X-Men vol 6 provided full context and was more exciting).

I liked it, but I think after going through an X-Men marathon... It wasn't as good. I waffled between a 3 and 4/5. I'll settle on a 3/5 mostly because I don't think it's as good as several other 4s out there.
