A Page is Turned

I just sent the following email to LPJ.

[To LPJ]

I am sending you this to let you know at this time: [June 30th] 10:47pm CDT, I have removed all NeoExodus products from RPGNow. They still show on their search engine, but they are no longer available and should be cleared out on their next refresh in the next hour or so - which is out of my control.

I believe I have removed all the links and reference from FOE's website.

Well I'm off!

Good luck.

JP

It was a rather emotional message for me to send as it marks the end of a long and quite prosperous relation. It tried to keep it short. It was the setting that I really helped grow into a coherent whole and a lot of myself is it.

I wish my friend the best and know we'll get around a White Russian again at a con in the future. Though emotional for the time invested, I see the future as bright and open for FOE. The partnership and experience gained with LPJ is invaluable to me and something I will cherish.

But like leaving high school, I will now fly under my own wings. The Tyrants of Saggakar line is really exploding (eclipsing all my other products in both numbers of sales and dollars). So I know there is a market for it I just have to keep pushing myself to make better and better products every day.

So it is an emotional day, but one I know will lead to bigger and better things for all involved.

Sad? Yes. Happy? Yes.

See you at the gaming table my friend, let's give our players so many options they wonder what to buy next!

First Ones Entertainment now active, with products!

It's been a long road and many of you have asked about how to get NeoExodus Legacies products. Well after a long time and much negotiationS, I am very happy to announce that First Ones Entertainment (FOE) is now offering NeoExodus Legacies adventures for sale through RPGNow!

A big shout out goes to LPJ Design for creating such a vibrant world and allowing us to branch off. You can expect more NeoExodus products from him (and me) through his line. This "split" was brought on for a number of reason, mostly having to do with time. As all of us work daytime, and we have a number of projects we need to focus our attention one. Not the least of which is that LPJ is putting the finishing touches on Obsidian Apocalypse (my part for it has been turned in, but there is still a lot more to go). And I must admit waiting with fanboyish glee at the expectation of seeing the finalized product.

I invite you to bookmark us as we will be rolling out more adventures - for Legacies and others in the near future. I don't want to say too much here, but I have a number of thing in the works. Things I can't wait to share.

I spent months teasing you with "big news" well they are finally coming out!

You can check us out by following this link: FOE Site on RPGNow.

Big Legacies News Coming

Tonight, after he finished watching "Agents of Shield" (which I missed due to cable box failure - let's not go there), I caught LPJ in a good mood and we got to talking about a number of things: Free RPG Day 2014, NeoExodus Legacies, writing projects, licensing, and a number of unrelated topics. A number of decisions were made during that hour or so. Including him laughing at my artistic talents. AGAIN.

Though I am still waiting, there are big decisions to announce.

You might see a few Legacies-compatible NeoExodus adventure popping up in new venues, some new products, and maybe some new surprises... This is some really exciting stuff! I know I've been talking about these things for a long time now but they are finally all coming together in a neat package. As usual, all at the same time!

Of course!

NeoExodus Kickstarter Plea! It's ending!

Despite being very close to the NeoExodus Free RPG Day Kickstarter project, I try not to inundate your inboxes with pleas about it, but now that it is about to end, I allow myself to make one last plea to you.

We have reached funding level but there are a number great things left to unlock. If you can, please give, you will receive and bring the fun of the game to a lot of people around the world.

Plus, as a secret goal, I plan on running a For-Backers only playtest of the adventure (available only in Colorado, Montreal/Ottawa and Phoenix, Az at this time), where YOU will be able to provide me with your thoughts, insights and get to influence the adventure. Playtests are very important to me as they provide a dynamic model of the game in play. If I can entice you that way, I'm willing to do it.

If you can, please back our project, the core is written (so we're not gonna flake out). It needs play-testing, art and editing. So there is little to no risk for you! There are great stretch goals left to attain: Lee Hammock (from Goblinworks) and Richard Farrese (now from Ubisoft/Assassin's Creed 3) could add to the adventure!

Here is the link.

And it's a go! LPJ started our Kickstarter a little early I guess my excitement about the project got to him and he just had to get it on track!

You'll notice that I have placed a tracker on the page (top right) to allow people to get there... Who am I fooling? Its so I can one-click to there! As more and more people give, he will unveil some more goodies for all.

Now I have to get to writing for the promised goodies!

NeoExodus Legacies Campaign Book Released!

I've been talking about it since mid-August, well it's finally here! The NeoExodus Legacies Campaign Book (NLCB) is out for public consumption! I cannot say enough good things of the work D'Anne, Linda and Louis did to get this done. It was a massive, endeavor.

A bit thanks goes out to the many people who provided us with thoughts, feedback and input that went into this document. These guys provided us with words of encouragement, warning, approval, opposition and support. It was not an easy task sifting through the feedback to take the best of all proposals. It's pretty clear that people who enjoy organized play are a diverse crowd. From those who enjoy the combat/crunch aspect to those who like the fluff/non-combat aspect. That's one of the great elements of organized play: the two styles come together.

Also, a BIG thank you to Paizo for putting a great campaign together. Their product is great and we all enjoy it regularly. NeoExodus Legacies is very much a "thank you Paizo" campaign. We want people to play Pathfinder and expand how they play. The end result: we all get to play more.

There are two ways you can get the file (both are free). You may get the Full Version, which is ideal for printing. But there is also a Lite version which is ideal for tablets & smart phones, get for free if you pay-with-a-tweet (tweet it and you get it for free). LPJ has additional information on his blog which I will not repeat, but I strongly recommend you check out (if you're still not decided about it).

NeoExodus and Ultimate Psionics

I hate kickstarter because I keep finding some great things I would like to own: from minis to RPGs, there is always something I want to have. This includes LPJ Design's latest offerings: Obsidian Apocalypse and NeoExodus adventures.

I won't go into all the reasons why I like this and why I think it's awesome, I'll let you make up your own mind.

After working behind the scene for a few days, Dreamscarred Press and LPJ Design announced today that every one who supported the Kickstarter for 30$ or more would receive a copy of a psionic-based adventure set in NeoExodus.

That's right! Not only do you get the Ultimate Psionic book (which contains the psionic rules we use in NeoExodus), and a lot of goodies (there is like 5-6 PDF and more good stuff). For 30$ you cannot go wrong with this.

I'll admit I expected Paizo to bring out such a psionic handbook this year. Having my hands on a copy of the original book. It's very good! Some recent NeoExodus use it!

About the adventure? Here is the Blurb:

NeoExodus: The Silvered Skull

Nestled high in the Grit Mountains the village of Oldenhaffen is famed for the quality of its wool. Passing through, the town elder runs to you imploring your assistance. Ever since a local shepherd brought back a silvered Cavian skull, things have gone... Insane. Anyone who touched the skull is now frozen in place, unmoving. A psionic-based NeoExodus adventure for 3rd-level characters.

Want to know more? Head on to Ultimate Psionics Kickstarter page... and make this a reality!

And I hear a number of you asking "will this be allowed/adapted in NeoExodus:Legacies?" Yes! Yes! It will! Details still TBA (CURSE YOU NDA), but if you get your hands on The Silvered Skull, you will bet able to play it for credit with your NeoExodus Legacies characters!

Hang on, I've got a lot more cool stuff to announce!

I'm joining Obsidian Apocalypse Kickstarter

LPJ doesn't want me to say but Obsidian Twilight was the first product that put me in touch with his products, then I was introduced to NeoExodus and well... You all know the rest. But this post is about Obsidian Apocalypse.

LPJ is stubborn. For weeks now I have been asking him to add me to the Kickstarter for Obsidian Apocalypse. For all this time I was pitching ideas to him on things I'd like to do there. Unlike NeoExodus, I wouldn't have the time to do it all, and with the great names attached to the project, I was like a moth to a flame.

I mean, guys I admired like James Desborough who wrote the original product. Owen Stephens who is a giant in the industry and someone whom I got the honor of updating to Pathfinder some of his work on NeoExodus (the Sanguine Covenant and the Order of Kaga). And Richard Pett who wrote many of my favorite Pathfinder adventures.

By the way... DAMN YOU RICHARD PETT! I still have nightmare about Carrion Hill! DAMN YOU!

I felt a little starstruck and the idea of adding a few of my idea to this massive project weighed on me. I've been wanted to add some of the ideas to the project that I had from the start. So my stubbornness came into play. Finally, I won!

Before some of you go berserk about me dropping NeoExodus, I'm not. I just want to add a few things to OA, not the whole thing. Help on with the project as a fun side-project from NeoExodus.

There are just a few days left on this! Check it out. Kickstarter for Obsidian Apocalypse

NeoExodus: It's finally here! Real Books!

So tonight I came home with dinner. We all sat down to eat and about halfway through the meal when my wife casually mentions "oh yeah, you have boxes at the front door."

I immediately stood up, ran to the door, swung the door open and to my great joy... A box from LPJ Design! Finally, my NeoExodus books had arrived!!! I told the kids to get out of the way (because they too were curious!) Their little faces at the idea of "Daddy's book" was priceless. Knowing what I had, I willed myself to wait until 8pm before opening the box.

So I will do that with you just now! Let us open this massive box of goodies together

The box itself.

The box opened, revealed the packing is revealed

BOOKS! The NeoExodus books! Real books!

The stack of NeoExodus!

A first look inside: prestige classes

More Art

Part 1 of the feats

Part 2 of the feats: two full pages!

If you want one of those bad boys, contact me, I have them for sale for 25$ each (which is like 2$ less than you can buy them for online). Unsurprisingly, these are in EXTREMELY limited numbers and quite a few of them are already assigned to people.

Now I will finally own my own copy of this awesome book.

Don't worry... you can still order them directly from NeoExodus.com so those are not the only ones out there... Just the only ones I have.

Okay I will leave you now... I have a book I need to hug.

MY BOOK!

Hummm...

NeoExodus on Free RPG Day [Kickstarter, Hero lab]

Some of you may have already seen (through Twitter or Facebook or G+), but Louis Porter and I have been toying with the idea. No. That's not right. We've decided we wanted to put in a NeoExodus adventure as part of 2012's Free RPG Day. Now I've been participating in that since... what is it, 2009? Well I love the idea as it promotes table-top gaming across the world (at least in my area).

To help us raise the funds, we plan on using kickstarter to get as many goodies as we can to you. This would cover the printing costs and the art costs. And the end result would be to provide in YOUR local store more NeoExodus adventures. I will post here more information about the Kickstarter when we approach the conclusion of the project. I REALLY encourage you to participate if you can as it means more art, more goodies, more NeoExodus products to your store and more to play!

So Louis and I have been talking about what we want to do. How can we showcase NeoExodus in a small document we can get people to play in under four hours. Those constraints are NOT easy as a writer, but not impossible either. Adding to those constraints, we need to provide an introduction to the world, pregens (yes, we will use our iconics) and perhaps most important of all, a fun adventure to play!

I had a half-idea (a basic outline was more like it), but nothing with a hook I really liked. Then this morning, as Louis and I were facebook chatting (as usual), he came up with another half idea that mixed with mine gave the hook I needed.

The good news? You will get another fun NeoExodus adventure next year. Even this introductory adventure is designed to show you what NeoExodus is, and let you in on our twisted minds. And trust me, nothing in NeoExodus is ever as easy or simple as walking through the forest...

While we are at it, something that's been bugging me for a long time, and I may use the opportunity to finally do: more Iconics. Yes... While I love the ones we already have, I've been wanting to create one iconic for every race in the campaign book. That means FIVE MORE ICONICS! We have been talking about roping that in with the Kickstarter, and that's a likely case. (you will notice there are only 5...)

  • Cavian Wizard
  • Dalrean Druid
  • Gevet Oracle
  • Kalisan Barbarian
  • Sasori Ranger

I'm not sure if I mentioned it, but I have a minion who is working on adapting the NeoExodus campaign setting (and hopefully more things that will come later as well) to Hero Lab! That way you will be able to create NeoExodus characters on your PC! It's not fully ready yet (we're still missing a fair amount of stuff), but I'm very excited about this... it'll save a lot of time creating characters! As soon as it becomes available, you know I'll be blogging about it.

Playtesters wanted for NeoExodus: A house divided

Here is a repost of a post from LPJDesign's blog regarding playtesters for NeoExodus. Contact the address in there if you are interested (yes, that's me!)

We at LPJ Design make no secret that I want to see NeoExodus become a household name. For that, I need to make sure what we have is great and could be picked up by GMs across the globe and run for their home group. Thus far, the reaction has been very positive, but I seek to get a wider range of groups.

We are looking for a few (two or three) groups of play-testers (GM plus 3-6 players) who would be willing to run a few sessions of NeoExodus for their home group and provide feedback to us about the experience.

How to apply:

Send an email to JP at Playtesters {at} Chapleau.us and be sure to include the following information, and anything else you think you would be good for that

1) Who is part of your group? (Names, anything of interest about you)

2) Have you ever play-tested or reviewed anything? What? Were any recommendations you did added to the game?

3) Why do you think your group of best-suited to become play-testers for NeoExodus?

4) How often do you meet?

5) Where is your group located, geographically?

Compensation

You will be given play-tester credits in the NeoExodus Campaign Book (and any future NeoExodus book you participate in testing). The GM will get a copy of the finalized PDF of the book.

Thanks for your help!

Widowmaker Scarlet is out!!!

I have been talking about it for a while now. And it’s out.

If the First Ones are the boogeymen that terrorize the people of Exodus, what scares the First Ones? What could scare the First Ones to such a degree that merely mentioning it would cause them to fall dead of fright? If the First Ones are not afraid of death, pain or torture, then what are they afraid of? First Ones fear the loss of their identity, loss of themselves, or loss of their free will.

A single creature has the power and the ability to do precisely that. Such a creature terrorizes the First One so much that her name is never spoken out loud to avoid drawing her attention. The name "Widowmaker Scarlet" is not used by the First Ones. It was given to her by scholars from Exodus because her true name is unknown. Most of the information found in this document was gathered from tattered scrolls and lost books which were created from incomplete and secondhand accounts. Since knowledge about Widowmaker Scarlet is considered heretical by the Sanguine Covenant, most such documents have been destroyed. The Order of Kaga considers Widowmaker Scarlet to be the single most dangerous threat to Exodus today, even if no direct conflict with her has ever been reported.

This supplement includes:

  • All the information to use Widowmaker Scarlet as NPC villain including history, relations and how to use Widowmaker Scarlet in your gaming sessions.
  • Four all new spells: Immediate Possession; Immediate Possession, Greater; Oath of Khayne and Word of Khayne.
  • Statistics, abilities and rules for Widowmaker Scarlet (CR 15, 18 & 20)
  • New magic item: Singiver
  • Initiative and Monster Cards

Get your copy here (Though I would STRONGLY recommend you get the Axis Of Evil Bundle for the full First One Nastiness).

[Rant] Louis Porter stalks me!

So today I went to YouTube to change my playlist and add some new bands I discovered.

GAH! I can't lie... I wanted to hear "Planet of the Apes: The Musical" and I could not get out the "I hate every ape I see. From Chimpan-A to Chimpan-Z" lyrics out of my head. So I type Y-O-U-T-U-B-E-DOT-C-O-M. And guess who appears? Stalking me once more? That's right.

Louis Porter Junior.

There is no escape. The man stalks me when I'm eating. He stalks me when I watch Star Trek. He stalks me when I try to play D&D Online. His name keeps popping up when I use DropBox.com. In short, he's always there. I tried to avoid him by... going to YouTube or even playing Playstation 2. Now I'll have to play more PS2.

Hey wait! *HE* owes me money! Hummm I guess I should start hiding in the bushes outside his YouTube and check out what he is doing...

JP has left, skulking in the dark corners of the internet...

[NeoExodus] Order of Kaga released!

The Order of Kaga was formed during the dark days of the First Ones’ rule. The Kaga (or simply Kaga) was created when mankind’s brightest minds united into a unique feat of arcane magic. They created a massive ritual that included more than a thousand arcane spell casters. The secret of combining their energy together is something the brightest minds have since tried to understand and recreate without success. Many believe that some great divine magic was used. Others believe that Kaga achieved godhood through the ritual. Others believe Kaga is just a front for some shadow organization.

This magical union gave mankind and its fellow slaves under First One domination an unexpected edge. Like a God-Emperor, Kaga led the rebellion in a series of apocalyptic battles that ended with the crushing of the First Ones’ bases on Exodus. The Kaga is a large repository of knowledge and at times in the past has provided mankind with information and wisdom to make the world a better and more stable place. The Kaga appears as a man made of arcane energy, looking like a red and silver human. “Priests” of Kaga do not draw their power from divine source, but from an arcane source that mimics divine powers.

Another book I did for LPJ Design has been released! It includes a full write up of the history of the Kaga's "religion", two new prestige classes, new archetypes, new spells, new feats, new magic items, new magic tomes, a new monster, adventure seeds, in short this one has a little of everything!

That book includes some very interesting twists on some classic theme. For example, every cleric of Kaga must belong to the archetype included in this book. This makes them clerics but arcane casters instead of divine.

Perhaps one of the coolest aspect of the book is the art. Louis is known for producing books with great art. Order of Kaga is not an exception! I just *LOVE* the art in there.

I really liked to work on that book as ideas for it just flowed and flowed. Built upon the work by RPG great Owen Stephens, this redesign and expansion of the previous book took the original work (which I'll admit I found a tad dry) and really tried to turn this book into a supplement to be used by both GMs and players, rather than "just" a straight background book. I took pains to focus on the "how to use this book" in your campaign.

I will admit that as I wrote it, I kept thinking how can I use this in an adventure?, a mantra I've been repeating to Louis for months now. Just non-stop. When I pick up a sourcebook, I want to know how I can use the content in an adventure or a campaign. This book provides that. A GM should be able to add the content quickly and get ideas. Players should also find a lot of good stuff for their character (particularly if they "worship" the Kaga).

Buy it at RPGNow: Click Here (includes a preview of the art I mentioned)

The Scythians are out!

It is with great pride and joy that I can report that LPJ Design has published my first book for their NeoExodus line, Monsters of NeoExodus: The Scythians. I posted about it the other day and I am really looking forward to some of the reviews for it.

The new art is really cool! Can't wait for more products to come out.

PaizoCon 2011, one-offs and much writing

I have finally got off my butt and booked my trip to PaizoCon in June and reserve my hotel room - that I will share with fellow VC Auke Teeninga from Benelux. That's done. Best part of it: PaizoCon falls around the time that Julie and the kids leave for their yearly trip to Montreal! So it should not cost me too many wife points. All good I tell ya.

PaizoCon will be a first for me in many ways.

  • It will be my first trip to the Pacific Northwest
  • It will be the first time I go to a big non-WotC con (I attended Winter Fantasy and D&DXP a few times).
  • It will be the first time I get to meet a number of my fellow Venture-Captains.

Following my Doctor Who experience, I have been thinking about a followup or sequel to "Somewhen in Time". Something perhaps more elaborate and with a fixed table throughout. I have been thinking about seeing if I could run it as part of Petrie's Family Games store's RPG schedule. Since I am still in the thinking phase of the idea, I am still waffling about what/how to do it. So for now, its just a project for another day... I mean with Valentine's Day, and Genghis Con coming up, I'm pretty tied up... So for you Doctor Who fans... it'll be a few weeks at least.

On top of that, Jim, the son of my good friends John & Pam contacted me about doing some Mutants and Mastermind. Although I do not have the time to commit to a full, regular campaign, I do miss seeing them and will have to work on something for them. Perhaps a game day format or short 2-3 shots.

What has been consuming most of my free time lately - other than my "MAIN" job has been a number of projects with LPJ Design. I am currently working at overhauling the Base Book for the setting. I am very proud with the results. It has more than the original, including archetypes (4 right now), prestige classes (more than 5), new feats (over 70 as I write this) and the history of the world and gazetteer with a number of surprises added.

This is pretty much a full rewrite of the setting. Not so much because of new material, but because the document has been massively reorganized, allowing for quick searching. The biggest change is in the gazetteer. The old province names have been replaced with the name of the current states (so the entry for the Caneus Empire is now under Caneus Empire and not Nas, with its own history, adventure locations, character options, adventure hooks and a few important NPCs). I have gone through a number of LPJD products and gathered material to add to the final product, really making it the one-stop shop for NeoExodus. Good enough to have someone pick it up and run a NeoExodus campaign.

This book is - as of right now - over 70 pages long with out any art or Louis' magic touch to make the documents look good. I am very excited about it. If only I had like 8 weekends so I could run one day of NeoExodus a week!

The Sanguine Covenant 2.0

For the past weeks, I have been working on re-vamping LPJ Design's Sanguine Covenant book for NeoExodus. It was a good book with an interesting take on monotheism in a fantasy setting. Trying to include a world view that encompasses and explains the polytheism in the world. Unlike our world where the mysteries of God are not readily available to all.

Okay, they are and he does, but he does not manifest his power through direct, obviously magical means like we see in Pathfinder / fantasy RPGs. I would be surprised if I could go to my local bishop and ask/pay for a heal to get rid of my asthma and diabetes... Man that would be cool... But he's more mysterious than that, and I like that. GO JESUS!

The original document was written by Owen KC Stephens (whom I had the pleasure of meeting at Neoncon 2011) and Chris McCoy. It was a good document, went into a lot of details and after reading it, I considered myself to be well-versed in what the Covenant and how it operated.

So why update it?

First off, the prestige class, Covenant Daemonslayer that was found within seriously needed some re-vamping. Not because it was bad. Simply because Pathfinder does certain things much, much easier than 3.5 did. I wanted to revamp the class and to make it simple and attractive.

Second, I looked at the feats presented in the book. While good, many feats no longer applied in PFS. So I took it upon myself to review every feat, one at a time. While keeping in mind game balance, I updated some, removed others and wrote new ones.

With most of the number-crunching behind me, I went over the rest of the document with the two following goals. 1- Provide information that could enhance a game and 2- Make this document a complete reference for the Covenant. I did a lot of reformatting and moved things around to give it a more natural flow.

Finally, I have this major pet peeve with these source books. I want adventure ideas. Not full-fleshed out adventures, but ideas, something I can just glance over and gain some inspiration. Like those old GURPS supplements I keep looking at, just for their "adventure seeds". So I added those in.

Satisfied with my work, I reclined on my chair and took a deep breath.

I was happy.

Then I remembered that the Sanguine Covenant had ANOTHER element... There was another prestige class that was not in the original document, but that was out there. The Covenant Purifier. The purifier is the left hand of the church. They are the assassins of the Covenant. So I asked Louis if I should include that class into the new document. A few minutes later, I was reviewing the prestige class to the Sanguine Covenant.

So there you are folks. The sum of a lot of work is mostly done, now its the editing and reviewing that begins. But the bulk of the work is there for us to critique first before it goes out to you!

NeoExodus Adventure First Draft

For the past few posts, I have been telling you about my involvement on a writing project for LPJ Design. Well, finally, my first draft is complete! I worked like a mad man to complete the “manuscript” and now it is done. From here on, it’s editing, cleaning up, strengthening, tightening and making better.

For those who plan on writing and publishing material, the most important and hardest part is completing this first draft. After that you can change, tweak and re-arrange to your heart’s content. Unfortunately too many would-be authors get so focused on minutiae and pre-editing work that they never finish anything. Sit, write and get that first draft completed. Moving text around is easier than coming up with it in the first place.

Now you ask: what have I been working on? An adventure, of course! I hope that it will be the first of many adventures that will be part of the NeoExodus line.

Sneak peeks and details you ask? The current working title is “Origin of Man”. But that may change - it has already changed once since I started working on it last month. It targets a solid group of 4 or 5th level characters using the Pathfinder RPG.

When I started talking with Louis about NeoExodus, I was telling him that NeoExodus is an awesome line. Great, flavorful races; a unique history; many, many great groups and secret societies, the thing it lacks is adventures that showcased them. It’s one thing to come up with a creature. I find that creatures presented to me in the course of an encounter then the reason for the creature’s existence provide meaning. It’s no long just a series of stats and a monster. It’s something for my PC to defeat. A way to be a hero!

As I was writing the adventure, I pointed out to Louis a number of points that concerned me as a writer. Thing I understood as a concept, but that I did not really know how to present to the GM/ players. I guess that’s one of the big differences between a setting writer (Louis) and an adventure writer (me) that we approach certain ideas and concepts differently.

If you didn’t know, Louis and his team are working hard to update the setting from 3.5 to Pathfinder. He posted his release schedule on his blog. A lot of things in there and an exciting time really. I hope he enjoys what I do and gives me more work. I think he already assigned more things for me to do… I just need to know what!

That’s it for me!

JP
